Environment

Gem Diamonds strives to limit the environmental impact associated with its activities. The Company is committed to complying with all relevant regulatory requirements applicable to the environments in which it operates and seeks to meet World Bank and International Finance Corporate (‘IFC’) guideline standards with regards to environmental management.

In order to meet these environmental responsibilities, Gem Diamonds commits itself to:

• implementing and maintaining a structured environmental management system;
• regularly setting environmental objectives to ensure measurement, monitoring, reporting and improvement;
• identifying, assessing and managing the potential environmental risks associated with the areas in which the Company operates;
• developing procedures to ensure safe, effective and environmentally friendly systems of work, with the active involvement of employees, local communities, government organisations and other interested and affected parties;
• providing employees with information and training regarding the environmental aspects and risks relevant to their areas of work;
• recycling and optimising the use of water to promote the efficient use of natural resources;
• promoting the effective use of energy resources to reduce consumption;
• taking measures to actively reduce the Company's carbon footprint;
• preventing and reducing all forms of pollution by applying effective technologies;
• making adequate financial provision during the life of our operations to ensure sustainable ongoing environmental rehabilitation when operations close;
• meeting and, where possible, exceeding the legal requirements of the national and local authorities in the areas in which we operate; and
• regularly reviewing the level of implementation of the environmental management systems at all operations to ensure they remain current and effective.

To this end, Gem Diamonds will provide the necessary financial, physical and human resources required to ensure the implementation of and compliance with this policy.
